Challenge and thrill of pre-college mathematics, co-authored by dr v krishnamurthy, c r pranesachar, b j venkatchala, and k n rananathan was written to help students enjoy mathematics at its best. It can urge the reader to explore new methodologies to have maximum fun with numbers, and opt for a higher course in mathematics. The book was specifically designed to help the student community, and develop a strong affinity towards problem solving.the book offers many complicated, and interesting challenges for the user, keeping them engaged throughout. A large number of solved problems are also included in challenge and thrill of pre-college mathematics, to give readers an insight into the subject. The book can be an eye-opener for school students of class 7 and above. The materials given in the book are powerful enough to help them develop a strong interest for the subject. The concepts are explained in a simple and comprehensive manner, providing them with a good understanding of mathematical fundamentals.what makes the book distinct is its detailed sections on geometry, that can improve the reasoning skills of students. There are also detailed accounts on algebra and trigonometry, enhancing the competitive ability of the users. The topics such as combinatorics, number theory, and probability are also explained in detail, in the book. Each chapter was designed with the intention of motivating students to appreciate the excitement that mathematical problems can provide. Published in 2003 by new age international publishers, the book is available in paperback. Key features the book includes a collection of more than 300 solved numerical problems, compiled from various national, as well as international mathematical olympiads.it is widely recommended by students and teachers, alike as an essential preparatory book for those writing competitive examinations.

Very rarely do you find a single textbook that covers most of the materials for math olympiad or contests aspired students. Also, it's hard to find one high school math text that provides a comprehensive (meaning from basic to advanced) topics to students. 10 years ago I struggled to find one in vain, ended up with reading different treatise like books by Loney, Palmer, Knight-Hall etc to get a solid background in secondary/precalculus math. Now this book does it all. The only drawbacks are that: 1. many typos; 2. typesetting is pretty ugly; 3. no solutions to exercises--which can render the reader infinite amount of time to work out all the problems.Below are the table contents:
0. Number System
1. Arithmetic of Integers
2. Geometry: Straight Lines and Triangles
3. Geometry: Circles
4. Quadratic Equations and Expressions
5. Trigonometry
6. Coordinate Geometry of Straight Lines and Cirlces
7. Systems of Linear Equations
8. Permutations and Combinations
9. Factorization of Polynomials
10 Inequalities
11 Elementary Combinatorics
12. Beginning of Probability Theory
13. Beginning of Number Theory
14 Finite Series
15. De Moivre's Theorem and Its Applications

Challenge and Thrill of Precollege Mathematics CR Pranesachar 9788122409802 Books Reviews
Thank God it is out of print. Reading this book, it felt as if the authors wanted to show their superiority in math and that they are least interested in helping the students. When I was a kid, there was no training available for math Olympiad in India. I used to bike miles together to a math professor's home which was at a remote place outside my town. I carried this book with me to try and understand the ways of solving tough problems. It was hopelessly written. Just basic theorems were given with no information about any heuristics. The text part consisted of theorems and some worked out problems and the exercises were all mightly hard (all taken from IMOs for the most part). How was I supposed to understand the ways of solving such problems?
Please look at the book written by Arthur Engel titled "Problem Solving Strategies". Right now, the book is even freely available on some website and you can google it to find the link. This book exemplifies the way to write a training book for math Olympiad. Math Olympiad problems are tough ONLY if you are not familiar with the heuristics. If you know the heuristics well, it is very much possible for any person with average intelligence to solve those problems.
I know the culture at IISC math department very well as I have friends and relatives belonging to that circle. These authors are/were from that school. Right now, younger math professors are coming in and I hope they will do a better job. But the older ones have only one thing on their mind. That one thing is to show superiority to others about their knowledge. Please avoid this book completely as it is useless. It will only make you feel more inferior and won't help in any way to crack Olympiad. I suggest Arthur Engel's book as a start. If you have time, you can look at other books also like "The Art and Craft of Problem Solving" by the fantastic author Prof. Paul Zeitz and "Mathematical Olympiad Challenges" by another great Prof. Titu Andreescu. Avoid this nonsense of a book completely.
Addition These authors are the leaders of the IMO for India. If you look at India's position in the Olympiads, you will find that it is nowhere near the top bracket. That says a lot about the leaders who lead the Indian teams. This book supports that as you can see why these people are ineffective in being able to train Indian kids to obtain more gold medals.
