Which is where Pendleton comes in as he's the latest hire at the family's company and as there is only a couple months to the deadline the family's last hope to hold on to the company and the fortune/lifestyle that comes with it? It was revenge for all of the years of Holt and his son's chasing off any potential boyfriend Kit has ever had and I think also an attempt to pave the way for her daughter to be able to get married without any interference. She's never had a relationship last for any significant amount of time, except for one relationship where she made it all the way to the night before the wedding, when her fiancee was paid a quarter of a million dollars not to marry her.
Pendleton is dismayed to find out one of his very first assignments on starting to work at the company is tracking the spoiled Kit down. Kit at times over the course of the story is not always easy to like as she comes across as pretty spoiled and handles some things in a pretty childish way. But as you get to know the girl's father over the course of the story I really felt sympathetic for her as her father doesn't seem to think much of her and it's pretty apparent that it's not just about her behavior over the course of the last two years as it feels like he's never thought much of her. Somewhere along the way that attitude was passed along to Kit's brothers to a certain extent as well.
Does Kit let the deadline come and go and sacrifice the family fortune? Does she deserve to have that kind of power over her father and brothers? Does Pendleton keep his job and to what extent does he find out the main reason he was hired? What does he do with this information? Is Kit able to believe in love or does she continue to let her father's influence her opinions and beliefs about love and relationships? To what extent is Pendleton's job future tied into getting the boss's daughter to marry him and what does he do with it in the end?
I ended up really liking this book thanks to the set up at the beginning of the book and really wanted to know how everything would turn out. And over the course of the book there were a few times I wished something would happen to Holt Sr. as he was a pretty despicable in how he treated and thought of his daughter. Which meant that even though Kit had her faults deep down I was really rooting for her over the course of the story and I was pretty satisfied with how everything turned out.

I am surprised how many three and below stars this book received - this was one of the most entertaining, LOL stories I've ever read! It was superbly written with entertaining characters - including the star of this story, Kit, who was oh so funny, emotionally fragile and lovable all at once - NOT as one review stated "hateable"....Holt Sr. was despicable - looking to marry Kit off to anyone who'd accept...What kind of "loving" father would do that? Even to keep their fortune? Kit and Pendleton's verbal and physical banter was LOL hysterical and the best part of the story started AFTER he unceremoniously deposited her back home - the first time -) That is when the real fun began! Spicy, sexy, and oh so heartwarming - do not miss this story that will make you both laugh and cry...
My Man Pendleton by Elizabeth Bevarly is utterly delightful -- especially Pendleton, the hero of this book.

Initially, you may just feel that Kit, the heroine of this book, is a spoiled brat who has nothing to complain about, but look deeper. Even rich girls have insecurities and vulnerabilities.

Kit has a huge vulnerability. She doesn't think anyone will ever love her because past experience has taught her that all a man sees are dollar signs when he looks at her. Therefore, she has armored herself with cynicism that may prevent her from recognizing love when she comes face to face with it.

Enter Pendleton, a hero worth the title. He has his own agenda and a hilarious method of dealing with corporate bureaucracy and with the spoiled heiress.In fact, you'll find yourself grinning when Pendleton is on the scene.

I know it's hard to feel sorry for a woman who has, it seems, everything, but Kit is as insecure and nervous as any girl who ever owned a lipstick.

Delightful, humorous, and charming.
I would have given this five stars if EB had left out some of the corny words like va-va-voom. It gave me a feeling of lack of depth...a little too zany and unnecessary. I loved the progression of Pendleton and Kit's relationship from quizzical tolerance to genuine friendship to love. I also appreciated the fact that Kit didn't morph into an incredible beauty, but slowly grew into more than her first impression as Pendleton's feelings evolved. Kind of like what happens in real life as the inner beauty of your significant other enhances your perception of their physical characteristics. The secondary romance between Holt Jr and Faith worked very well for me, unlike another reviewer's opinion. Too often the secondary romances tend to mirror the primary romance and I felt EB did a wonderful job of creating a separate story line. I look forward to reading more of EB's work.
This is not the best book by Elizabeth Bevarly that I have read.

The hero, Pendleton is a wonderful guy. He has integrity, a sense of humor, a sense of adventure, a natural kindness and he is a hunk. He would be the kind of guy anyone would want for a best friend.

Kit, the heroine, is not someone I would like very much. She is a very self involved person. Yes, her father has not treated her in a way that shows any affection or respect. But, she had a loving mother and brothers who treated her like a sister.

Kit is from a family that is concerned about their 99.4 million dollar inheritance. That would certainly get my attention.

The book has humor. Ms Bevarly always writes in an entertaining manner.

This time, Kit could have been a little more likable and a little less willing to use people.

The getting to know one another is filled with genuine sincerity. That is the period where you like Kit almost as much as you like Pendleton.

If you want a light read, and one that has humor, this is a good book for you. I look forward to reading another Elizabeth Bevarly book.
