Where do I even begin? I've been a fan of C.J. Box's for years now and have loved every book he's ever written. In fact he's my favorite author. With that said, however, I was apprehensive about this book because I've never been a fan of short stories. It always seemed to me that by the time the stories would finally get interesting or you would finally start to care about a character the story was over and it was time to move to the next. Short stories frustrated me.

I was thrilled to find out that this wasn't the case with Shots Fired.

One of Box's strong suits is character development. He can make you appreciate even the most minor characters. I was devastated when each story ended because I wanted so badly to keep reading about the characters; I could probably read whole novels about some of them! This made it extremely easy to start the next story after finishing the previous because Box was able to hook me from page one just with the personalities of the central characters. I smiled every time I read about some characters and even cried over others.

The other thing Box does phenomenally is introduce the focus of the plot and describe the setting in a way that is very informative without being boring. He does an excellent job of emphasizing the points you need to know and leaving out the fluff that other writers include in a vain attempt to enhance their writing. When you read something in a C.J. Box novel, you know it will be important, with the exception of some fun facts he throws in once in awhile. I also love reading his paragraphs on the scenery and setting because he does such an impressive job of allowing you to really visualize the book in your mind.

The stories in this collection offer a very wide range from a handful of Joe Pickett stories to a story that takes place in France and even a story that takes place in the 1800s. You don't need to read any of the Joe Pickett novels before reading these short stories, although I encourage it if you don't want spoilers for the full length novels since the shorts play off of plots and characters from the novels. However, if you are intimidated by the idea of reading a fourteen book series (as I was at first), Shots Fired is a fantastic introduction to Box as a writer because of the way the stories highlight his strengths as a writer.

While there were some minor discrepancies between the Joe Pickett short stories and the series, they certainly didn't take away from the quality of the stories. All of the Joe Pickett's were highly entertaining and filled with action as well as C.J. Box's sense of humor. My personal favorite was "Shots Fired: A Requiem for Ander Esti". My other favorites included "Pirates of Yellowstone", "The End of Jim and Ezra", and "Every Day is a Good Day on the River". Eddie from "Pirates..." and Duke from "Every Day is a Good Day..." made me laugh endlessly. I still laugh rereading most of their lines.

None of the stories in this collection were anything short of fantastic and I loved them all. I suggest you don't read them all in five hour like I did however, as I felt a little burnt out towards the end. Each story deserves to be savored.

In short, I highly recommend Shots Fired to anyone who just loves a good story, regardless of genre or length, because there truly is something in this collection for everyone. C.J. Box is a true talent when it comes to crafting an incredible story!

Shots Fired is a great way to take a peek into the Wyoming of Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski.

Only a few of the short stories have Joe or Nate as the focal characters but all of them are set in the same region as the rest of C.J. Box's books.

You meet Jim and Ezra, a couple of fur trappers from Wyoming's past; Vladdy and Eddie, who become involved in a new type of "piracy"; and Native American men showing off the "wild" West to the Parisians.

Box brings the characters to life and just when you want to know more about these fascinating characters, the story ends.
Mr. Box has 10 short stories here. Some are related to Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski. However, there is one story which would be historical fiction, in the same area but the early 1800's. Another story is about two men who are American Indians who get jobs at Disneyland outside of Paris where they put on a show with others playing cowboys and Indians. It is more complicated than that, but fascinating in the differences in these stories. I enjoyed it.
I was at first disappointed to find this book was short stories. Generally, I don't like them. But I really like this author, so I plowed in. These were amazing. Each one created an entire world with developed characters and complete stories. I found myself unable to read one after another without some reflection. After each one, I had the feeling one gets having finished an enjoyable novel. Nice job C.J.
I am not a fan of short stories, but I AM a fan of C. J. Box. Through my purchases from I now own all of his Joe Pickett series
and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. My main criticism of SHOTS FIRED is that I missed the artistry of Mr. Box's descriptions of the beauty of Wyoming. I've been there and fell in love with the Bighorn Mountains. Reading his stories is almost as good as actually visiting the area again. And he weaves a complex and interesting story to keep you turning pages long after you should be asleep. Though the short stories that compose SHOTS FIRED are interesting they just aren't long enough to create the type stories that his longer novels has to offer. The stories contained in this offering does effectively showcase Mr. Box's versatility. I'm glad that I added SHOTS FIRED to my library. Sincerely, Louise Mustain September 26, 2014
I do not usually review short story collections, but will make an exception here. Why? Because C J Box is such a marvelous novelist that even his shortened, curtailed less fleshed out stories are better than the full fledged novels most authors turn out!

The ten stories here are very well done, especially the ones featuring Joe Pickett. Well, that might not be so true upon reflection. They all are beautifully written and tell stories you will appreciate.

Note that one is really and truly stellar and is only 1,000 words long. You too will learn the life lesson of all life lessons, that it is not the blood, but the knot! What do I mean? Read the book and find out!
I really enjoyed the smattering of all 10 short stories. The only detractor of said admiration was the duration of each snippet. Speaking of which, all ten sojourns had great promise, embodying a literary masterpiece in their own right. Kind of like admiring an iceberg from afar, realizing that 7/8ths of that visible monstrosity is submerged, and could, (if given the light of day), contribute exponentially to the cause.

Once again kudos goes out to author, C.J. Box. Having read all 23 of his books, I patiently await his next release, scheduled to hit the streets on 25 July 2017. Perhaps in the interim, I'll wade back into the tidal pool of nonfiction... as it's always fun to wet my feet in the undulating murky waters of reality.
