When their tangled webs finally unravel - as they inevitably do - all the backpedaling becomes embarrassing to watch. I found DARE to be a refreshing, straightforward read and a long-needed wake-up call, and highly recommend this for C-suite executives and for anyone in a position of authority or responsibility at any level.

This book was quite compelling. We live in a world of distrust when it comes to doing business. What can we do to change this climate? An honest conversation about having honest conversations. Customer relationships, employee engagement, interactions with everyone you encounter will be improved if you read and heed the advice in this book. On nearly every page I found myself saying Yes - Why aren't more people doing this?! The Dare isn't scary, it should be common sense. This book will inspire you to become the change agent you've always wanted to be without having to change who you already are.
This book made me think about the difference between talking and communicating, and how true connection can only come from the latter. Do I really understand the impact on what I want to achieve if my audience is not engaged?

The section that spoke about "The Self-Aware Leader" was very insightful. Taking time for self-reflection, and considering how others may see you. This is a worthwhile exercise that helps peel away the layers of the image we think we are projecting; only to find out it is much different than we thought.
As a whole, we have become increasingly distrustful of the voices projected by our leaders and others in positions of authority. This did not occur by accident or misunderstanding. It was a gradual yet steady erosion caused by deceits revealed after the fact. Some of these deceits were large scale, causing financial ruin for thousands. Others are grayer, small deceptions that, however well intended, are instead communicating a message of untrustworthiness.

But, as Scott Weiss explains in his book DARE Accepting the Challenge of Trusting Leadership, this doesn't have to be the status quo. "My concern is for each person to find a way of leading that is congruent with who they really are. To do this we first need to know our own core values and beliefs, be able to communicate them to others, and then ensure that our actions always match our words."

His passion for authentic and trustworthy communication began when he confronted, voluntarily no less, his own executive persona viewed on video during a leadership development program. Glaringly obvious to him, and the other industry leaders in the program, was that the projected persona was not a likeable individual, much less trustworthy.
